Digital Literacy Programme Equips Youth for the Modern Economy
In an increasingly digital world, access to technology skills is no longer a luxury — it is a prerequisite for economic participation. CAbyYouths' Digital Literacy Programme, now in its third year, has trained over 120 young Cameroonians in essential digital skills that are transforming their career prospects and entrepreneurial potential.
The programme runs in two tracks: a four-week foundational track covering computer basics, internet navigation, email communication, and online safety; and an eight-week advanced track covering social media for business, graphic design using free tools, basic web development, and introduction to freelancing platforms.
Why Digital Literacy?
Cameroon's digital economy is growing rapidly, but many young people — particularly those from low-income backgrounds and rural areas — are being left behind. Without basic digital skills, youth cannot access online job boards, create digital businesses, or participate in the global gig economy. CABY's programme directly addresses this gap.
"Before this programme, I had never sent an email," admitted one participant, a 22-year-old from a village in the North West. "Now I run an online clothing business with customers in three countries. I did not know this was possible for someone like me."
Partnerships Powering the Programme
The programme operates from three computer labs — two in Bamenda and one in Yaoundé — made possible through equipment donations from partner organisations and the CAbyYouths Canada chapter. Facilitators include both CABY staff and volunteer technology professionals from the diaspora.
What's Next
In 2025, CABY plans to expand the programme to two additional cities and introduce a new module on AI tools for small business productivity. We are actively seeking partners to provide devices, internet connectivity, and expert facilitators. Reach out to collaborate.
